Updated 04th May 2007: This article originally started out as an ‘aside’ a small article which doesn’t appear on the main page. Due to the amount of traffic coming to this page, I’ve expanded it to include a poll. We’d really appreciate your vote and / or comments!
Size Zero models please listen: Get some food down your neck, damnit! Look at this picture - attractive? I think not.
The comment above seemed fine when I first wrote this article, however now seems embarrassing given that this is such an important subject and has generated so much interest. The Size 0 model debate may have died down in the national press however quite obviously remains important to so many of you. Of course, this article / poll is more health than food related so is a little off topic.
I’ll throw in my 2 cents worth first, and after which I’d love to hear some of your comments, too. It’s not so much about appearance of the models (many people are naturally size 0, and beautifully so) as the social consequences of pushing this image as ‘desirable’. What happens to the youth of today (young ladies in particular) when they see this as being the perfect image, one they should strive to attain?

size 0 models but be out of their head. do thye think it is attractive to be that size…. and it is digusting when we can see their bones!!!… they must start eating because it is not attractive and larger women are starting to use tham as role models. this isn’t right….eat eat eat!!!!

Connie: I’d agree wholeheartedly. Men (at least me) don’t find this type of figure appealing in the slightest.

I think they’re sexy.

Jen: Well if that’s an honest opinion (you didn’t go into detail) I can’t fault you for it. My main concern is the health aspects associated with it.

whatever im a size o and have been working at hungry jacks (australian vesion of burger king) for 4 years now and i eat there at least twice a week and never been on a diet in my life. some people are naturally thin. its a lot healthier than being big enough to b a contesant on “the liggest losser”.
April 16th, 2007 at 1:23 pm
michelle: Size 0 isn’t a problem if it’s natural, such as yourself. It’s when an indistry forces it upon the models as “expected” that many young ladies then see the need to starve themselves to an unhealthy weight. Great to hear your opinion, though!

i agree with scott if its natural its ok bcz ur healthy but, wen their dieting to get to this size their not getting the right nutrients and its harming their health.
lots of people don’t find them attractive, they look sickly and its disgusting seeing someone who’s dieted their way to size zero.
whereas someone whos naturally size zero doesn’t look sickly bcz theyre eating, not starving themselves. and theyre getting all the nutrients they need.

carrie: Absolutely. We’ve seen so many examples of “healthy” looking models only become popular when they drop to an unhealthy size and weight - where you can quite literally see their bones through their skin. To be naturally thin is entirely different as it’s not unhealthy. Variety is the spice of life!

Women who diet themselves into emaciated oblivion are suffering from the mental illnesses of anorexia and/or bulimia and are in desperate need of psychiatric help that often doesn’t cure the problem - it is THAT difficult to treat. It’s a sad thing, their refusal to eat, while others in the world who are desperate with authentic hunger would love to enjoy what these distorted individuals reject from their plates.

Susan: The problem is that the world now seems to be casting aside any impressions they may be making on the youth of today. True, any adult should be allowed to choose how they look, but “the industry” needs to then sit up and say “we can’t set this example to our youth. It’s dangerous”. So many young girls enter into bulimia and anorexia after feeling pressured about their figure.

I’m not letting the industry off the hook, only that there is something terribly wrong with a skeleton of a figure looking in a mirror and thinking she is fat.
April 18th, 2007 at 11:36 am
Susan: I agree wholeheartedly. Sorry if I sounded like I was blaming you - I wasn’t - I was agreeing, honest!
April 18th, 2007 at 12:30 pm
No worries, Scott. I didn’t take it that way at all. I’m not even IN the industry. It’s a complicated modern issue that has many valid points to ponder. It can also leave one feeling frustrated and scratching his head that such a thing even exists. I don’t envy parents raising kids today; they have their work cut out for them for sure. It’s much easier to raise vegetables. : )

i tihnk that it is somebody elses opinion of what they want to be like.
I am a size 8 in uk and im still wanting to have a flatter stomach but thats the way i feel.
i dont agree with it sometimes as its terrible about making yourself ill because it annoys me when im ill nearly everyday and all my other friends are out having a good time and not caring about what they eat!
p.s Scott u seem to b a popular guy!
June 16th, 2007 at 4:54 pm
Dawnie: Great opinion. It’s a difficult line to cross - trying to understand why people do what they do, but without making assumptions (everybody’s different!).
And I wish I was popular…If only I could lose this weight
