ITB September: Fruit and Nuts

September 21st, 2008  | Print this page Print This Article

Despite the unexpected but welcome sunshine this weekend Autumn is definitely on its way.  In season are various types of fruits including plums, blackberries and apples, with chestnuts making their annual appearance, too.

With this in mind, what better subject matter for our seasonal food blogging event “In The Bag” than the classic combination of fruit and nuts?

Apple Tree

Apple Tree

All you have to do is create a recipe using your choice of whatever is available locally, blog about it, then email me the link (to scott [at] realepicurean [dot] com ) before the 7th of October.  Now who can’t manage to do that?

Details follow below.

Entry Details

Send an email with “In the Bag” in the subject line to scott [at] realepicurean [dot] com (only replacing the stuff in square brackets with real punctuation) by Sunday 05th October with the following information:

  • your name
  • a link to your post
  • the name of your dish
  • a picture of your dish

Rules
Here are the loose rules - but ultimately remember the objective is to have fun whilst highlighting seasonal food:

1. Participants should attempt to use all the ingredients ‘in the bag’ for that particular month, but may leave one out if they prefer. The dish should be based around the seasonal ingredient, with it acting as a central ingredient.

2. Participants can include any “extra” ingredients that they see fit.

3. Entries should include a link back to the host for that month, and the post should be tagged “In the Bag”.

4. Entries can be written any time during the month, as long as the URL is emailed to that month’s host before the closing date.

5. Participants from outside of the UK are most welcome to join in and substitute an item from their own local seasonal produce if necessary.

‘In The Bag’ is a food event run monthly by ‘A Slice of Cherry Pie‘ and ‘Real Epicurean’.  Now get cracking!

@Divya - Thanks. Now I just hope someone (including you) will enter! You will, won’t you?

  2. Angela says:

Hmm, I’ll have to get my thinking cap on, and also see if there are any plums left on our tree…

Scott, I live in a different hemisphere than yours as New Zealand is in Spring at the moment. I don’t think I can go with berries, as my strawberries are still in blooms, so are the stone-fruit trees. Uhmmm… I can do rhubarb or pears though. Perhaps citrus will be alright? Let me know!

  6. mindy says:

Thanks Scott for letting me know about this event. We don’t have autumn here in Venezuela. I can do with strawberries and apples but no with chestnut. We only have almond, nuts, pistachio. Are they ok too?

  7. scott says:

@Angela - Oh, I’m sure there must be some…If not just pretend, I’ll never know ;)

@Elisabeth Winkler - Thanks for entering! I’m not back from my holiday (which starts tomorrow) until the 3rd(ish) but I’ll try and make time to enter your competition when I get back.

@arfi - Any fruit is fine, just pick what is seasonal. It’s not your fault the weather is different over there (lucky bugger!)

@mindy - Absolutely OK. There’s no specifics to the rules except to have fun with fruit, nuts, or both.

  8. I love the concept of this event and if I can get my act together (and I promise to try really hard) I’ll send something for September.

  9. Y says:

I love this event, but I don’t think I’ve managed to enter before, due to our seasons being different to yours. However, I think this particular theme would allow anyone to join in, and hopefully I’ll manage to contribute something this time! :)
