Will you still buy turkey?

Last weeks poll (about whether you thought Bernard Matthews were partially to blaim for the recent Bird Flu outbreak) generated a lot of interest and some excellent comments, and so I’ve decided to make Polls a weekly thing, of which this is the second. I’ll start them off on a Sunday and review the results on a Friday ongoing…

The whole Bernard Matthews turkeys / Bird Flu thing is still very much in the press this week, with possible links found to Hungary (indicating the global problem of this disease). So why change subject just yet?

Several people at work have asked me over the past week if I will still continue to eat Turkey even with the current issues. My answer is always “of course I will - but not Bernard Matthews, which is never worth eating”.

But what do YOU think?

To be honest, I don’t eat turkey much. It’s not the favoured Christmas dinner in our family when we tend to have Duck instead which is a far tastier bird (my mum will probably never by turkey again after the protests of a few years ago when she decided it would be nice for change… yeah.. right). After all, the turkey is more of an American import to the UK, and duck is just so much nicer.

However, a couple of years ago I bought turkey steaks to be used for kebabs at my sister’s barbecue and it was great, so it certainly has it’s uses.

Turkey ham is just wrong though, and has put me off buying anything from Bernard Matthew for years! Any company which can come up with something so vile deserves to have their stocks incinerated.

mitchenall: Turkey ham is exactly the kind of processed junk I hate. I suspect most people in England don’t even know what “real” ham is, as opposed to this junk. Great points though from yourself, and thanks for you opinions :)

I’ve not had turkey for years, as like mitchenall I prefer other kinds of fowl.

However, our local butcher was named turkey butcher of the year last year, and sources all meat locally and non-intensively, so I might try some to show a bit of solidarity with those doing it in the right way.

    I think you’ve missed: “No - I can’t stand turkey!”

I just loved the “Culled Turkey” title. Wish I’d thought of it.

Andrea: I love turkey, and am trying to get out of the habit of being a once a year man. Turkey lasagne is a favourite of mine.

Trig: I’ve added that answer, ta. What’s the “Culled Turkey” title? You must be thinking of a different site, I can’t find those words anywhere on mine.
