EBBP #6: Directly From Sweden

October 6th, 2006

This was my first EBBP, and boy, did I love it. The basic idea is that Foodbloggers (such as myself) send away an interesting package of food, and receive one in return from a different country. It’s just like Christmas!

Euro Blogging By Post

My package arrived today, and it’s from Dagmar over at the excellent A Cat In The Kitchen website. I’d visited the site before so was already familiar with this Swedish lady who was raised in Poland, which gives us something in common (of course - my wife is Polish - you didn’t know already?).

Upon opening the package I was greeted with the most intriguing of aromas - what smelled like liquorice tea, and turned out not to be too far from it. Please read on for the items I received (and Dagmar, please forgive me if I haven’t used the appropriate squiggles and accents!).

Djungelvral: As Dagmar describes this, it’s a hot salty liquorice (at the top of the photo). It’s the first thing I smelled when I opened the package, and will be one of the first things I try.

Miniatyr Geletoppar -Krujbar: Small gooseberry flavoured jelly sweets, on the right of the photograph. Hey, I love gooseberries!

Kex Choklad: Small chocolate wafers, of which I received 6, as you can see. I’m beginning to see a pattern of a lady here who loves her sweets!

Hojtblandning (Autumn Mix): The most interesting item in the package in my eyes. This must have been the tea I smelled when I first opened the box, which is made with red currants, cranberries, vanilla, and more. I drink tea a lot (cutting down on the coffee), so this will be perfect!

Kalles Kaviar: I can’t speak Swedish but managed to roughly guess the contents of this blue tube, which it turns out is excellent on an egg sandwich.

Biscotti With Lingonberries and White Chocolate: The pride and joy of this package in both my and my Wife’s eyes. This came in a beautiful heart shaped tin, and was the first thing we both went to. These are delicate biscuits, which filled the air with their delicious scent when the tin was opened. We tried these first, and I’m happy to say that they were amazing.

A massive thankyou from both me and my Wife for this amazing little hamper. Make sure to check out A Cat In The Kitchen after reading this article.

    Hi Scott,

I’m glad that you liked your parcel and it seem to have traveled quite well. And yes I have a big sweet tooth….

I bought the tea especially for the EBBP parcel as I wanted something autumnal. I hope that you’ll like it.

I’m happy that you both liked the biscottis. As the tin was far too small my husband took the rest of the biscottis to work, and he says that they were very popular. But he was rather jelous when he saw the gooseberry jellies, so you’ll have to tell me if they were tasty as I promised to buy a package to him too :-)

Don’t get a shock when trying the djungelvrål, they are very salty :-)

I forgot to send some dried picked mushrooms, but you seem to be quite happy anyway :-)

    Take care,
/Dagmar (who’s actually born and raised in Sweden by Polish parents. So I guess that I’m a kind of mix :-)

What a great assortment! The Hojtblandning sounds so intriguing, as does everything else.

  4. johanna Says:

ah! I recognise some of these… didn’t get the same tea (mine was with rhubarb), but it sure was delicious! glad you liked your parcel and thanks for taking care of the round-up so swiftly!

  5. Anne Says:

Ooh, great bounty there! Do enjoy the Swedish candy - looks like you got my favorite too, the “Plopp”!

  6. scott Says:

Dagmar: Apologies I got your heritage a little wrong…

peabody: Maybe you would like to join in next time? Visit Johanna’s site…

johanna: Thanks for introducing me to such an amazing concept - it’s like xmas come early!

Anne: the candy is just delicious. Me and my Wife shared the “Plopp”, and it was lovely. My wife is currently muching another Kex, which I haven’t tried yet, but she seems to love.

What a great parcel! Is the djungelvrål similar to salmiakk do you think? I got to love it when I was in Scandanavia - and I’m just hoping that either this parcel or a future parcel that I get for EBBP will be from a Scandanavian country containing it! One day I hope!

Now, I am getting a bit jealous… Sorry Scott, but I can’t help thinking I am somewhat entitled to Dagmar’s home made biscotti.
Is it only me, or preparing food for someone you do not really know, puts them a little bit closer to you. I do not know how to explain it better, but doesn’t it create a sort of bond?
All right, it’s probably the late hours and the antibiotics in my blood stream, be forgiving and kind…
Anyway, well done to Dagmar. It sounds like a great treat!

Hi Scott, sounds like a lovely parcel, especially the biscotti and gooseberry candies. Dagmar knows how to surprise people - I didn’t have a chance to meet her when I was in Stockholm in July, but she had left me a wonderful goodie bag at the hotel reception, including some Kex chocolates and dried mushrooms:)

    Hey Scott…
Unfortunately I did not receive it yet… However I am not yet worried as we had our Holiday here the past 2 weeks so there might have been some delays. If I won’t be getting it this week I will start worrying about it. In fact, I am quite anxious to receive it already :( I hope it will end up well, and I will receive it soon. Of course I will blog about it as soon as I will get it!!! And will let you and Johanna know!!!
    Thanks for checking

Bonnie: No idea, sorry! I liked the djungelvrål, but my wife hated it : (

Simonetta: They were delicious, too. And the bond is there I guess - Dagmar loves has a Polish heritage and loves Polish food, just like me and my wife.

Pille: I’m sorry I missed out on the dried mushrooms - I could have used those! The whole package was excellent though, especially the tea.

Gitit: Make sure to let me know when it does arrive, and I’ll mention it on the main page (linking to your article).

  12. Andrew Says:

    Hey Scott…
Fianlly there are pictures on my blog!!!
The camera wasn’t on me for a few weeks so I could not take any pictures.
But as soon as I got it back I took photos of your parcel! Sorry for the delay :/
