In The Bag: February 2009

February is a bit of a dull month for food, with the exception of Valentines day – which has already passed us by! In the spirit of cheering us all up, this month’s edition of the seasonal food blogging event “In The Bag” is aimed at creating dishes from ingredients you just have to be happy with.
Bag Contents:
- Passion Fruit (in the Valentines spirit!)
- White Chocolate
- Pomegranate
You know the drill by now. In the style of “Ready Steady Cook” (a UK TV program) we give you a bag of ingredients, and you cook a meal using some or all of them. You can include any other ingredients you like, too.
Read on for more info!
Rules:
Entry Details
Make a dish using the ingredients and blog about it then send an email with ‘In the Bag’ in the subject line to scott AT realepicurean DOT com by Sunday 08th March with the following information:
- your name
- a link to your post
- a picture of your dish
Rules
Here are the loose rules – but ultimately remember the objective is to have fun whilst highlighting seasonal food:
- Participants should attempt to use all the ingredients ‘in the bag’ for that particular month, but may leave one out if they prefer. The dish should be based around the seasonal ingredient, with it acting as a central ingredient.
- Participants can include any “extra” ingredients that they see fit.
- Entries should include a link back to the host for that month, and the post should be tagged “In the Bag”.
- Entries can be written any time during the month, as long as the URL is emailed to that month’s host before the closing date.
- Participants from outside of the UK are most welcome to join in and substitute an item from their own local seasonal produce if necessary.
‘In The Bag’ is a food event run monthly by ‘A Slice of Cherry Pie‘ and ‘Real Epicurean’.

I can’t wait to see the entries for this one!
Me too. Let’s see what happens!
Sounds interesting! I like passionfruit and white chocolate together. How do you normally pick what to feature in the bag?
We choose ingredients that are “in season” where we live (the UK). I recognise that these ingredients won’t be in season everywhere in the world which is why we allow people to skip ingredients / substitute as needed.
I hope you can join in?
Oh how fun! I hope I can find passionfruit!
Hi Mara, if you can’t then feel free to substitute with something (reasonably similar) available locally. The idea is to have fun!
Just replied your email, am keen on it hehehe… hear you soon.
Hi arfi, got your email and replied. Just to clarify, you can skip any (but preferably not all, lol) of the ingredients if you can’t get hold of them / don’t think they’re appropriate for your dish.
Ohh..love this… but passion fruits are so expensive here… can I opted with the juice instead?
Hi Zita, of course, you can substitute the juice. Whatever you have available can be used – I’m flexible like that
Hey Scott, thanks for your email. We have always passion fruits here in Venezuela. I’ll figure it out what to make.
Hi Mindy, you’re lucky – I just love passion fruits, the taste is amazing and (for me, at least) tropical. I’m excited myself about what I might cook!
Oh my. This one looks like a dessert makers dream. I am not, however, a dessert maker so will simply enjoy the posts from my seat here on the futon.
I’m not much of a desert maker normally, so we’ll have to see what happens. Funny comment, by the way

Sounds like time to invite some friends for dinner, so I can make a dessert with these ingredients! I loved Ready Steady Cook when I watched BBC years ago! I also adore passion fruit. yet despite being thoroughly spoiled with produce here in Northern California, passion fruits are hard to come by and surprisingly expensive.
Shame they’re expensive; they’re not too bad over here, despite being quite obviously not grown locally. I’m still thinking what I should cook!
Hi Scott,
Just found out about this event, do I have to register first to enter? And does it have a specific rules or membership? I asked Julia, but just realized that you are the host for this month.
I’ve never used pomegranate in cooking before, and was really interested in playing with this ingredient. Hope I can keep myself focussed this few days. Time is running out. Anyways, let me know whether I can enter or not. Thanks =)
Cheers,
Asti
Hi Asti,
The rules are really easy, there’s no registration necessary. Just post a recipe using all or some of the ingredients listed about, and send me the link / recipe name before the closing date. That’s all there is to it really, and I’m even pretty flexible at that.
It’d be great if you could join in!
yup… definitely joining in.. I’m making mine now =).
i’ll email it to you tomorrow
Hi Scott,
Here is mine: http://mindysdeli.blogspot.com/2009/03/in-bag-sopa-de-auyama-en-jugo-de.html
I have probs sending mails today. I’ll try again later.

Hi Mindy,
Confirmation that I’ve got your entry as above. Thanks for this, I’ll make sure to post the roundup soon. It’s gonna be great!
Ok, so in Canada I am pretty sure that 80% of the population has never seen a passion fruit, let alone tried on (me included). I wouldn’t give up though and hunted for three hours today where I found 4 passion fruits and some pomegranate juice (pomegranate season is faarrr gone here) I AM READY. LOOK OUT WORLD!!
Looking forward to it! I’m still struggling to get passion fruits. Looks like I’m going really last minute on this one!
If you are really stuck use passion fruit juice, I saw some at the supermarket. Hope you find one or the other in time!
