What Are Your Favourite Sweets / Candies?

Sweets, huh? Something we (nearly) all love, but know that really we shouldn’t eat.

The one featured in the photograph is almost certainly my favourite – Polish chocolate covered plums (which, now I’m reading the label, contain trans fats and a couple of E numbers – oops) – and are very addictive!

But which ones are your favourites? Perhaps I can be swung into changing my mind. Leave a comment here or a response on your own site (link back to here and if there’s enough responses I will do a follow up article), and let me know.

I’ll look forward to learning about new treats that I can stuff my face with when no-one is looking :)

    I love sweets…in fact, candy should be its own food group. But, since I can’t eat chocolate, I have to stick to the hard candies and gummy things (which is not a bad thing). My favorite is split….first — I am a little bit embarrassed to admit – I love Sour Patch Kids. I can eat them all day long (even when my taste buds have been destroyed by the sour sugar). The other – Torrone. Oh – the Nougat and nuts! Hard to locate, but is it heaven on earth. Yum!!!

    They are my number one fave Polish chocolate, my wife loves bird’s milk, stones and Torcik.

    I’m partial to several specific Estonian candies, but also Dajm chocolates and Haribo sour ones (I know, the latter is all but a sensible choice).

    Polish Krowki, hard sour candies, hot salty liquirice, white chocolate with hazelnuts and rice crisps, nice milk chocolate and many more :-)

    What I definitly don’t like is pstasie mleczko (bird’s milk) and sliwka (even though your photo of it is really lovely).

  5. I love Polish Krowka, so good. Especially when its chewy :)

    Also a Canadian favorite candy is “Rockets”. They are my favorite candy at Halloween time. So good.

    I agree with Dagmar, Ptasie Mleczko may be a Polish trade-mark candy but I don’t like it.

    Chocolate covered prunes? Oh man! I’m weak for chocolate. Dark. With at least 65% cacao. So good all by itself or a glass of red…

    Chris: Never heard of ‘em, but I’m a sucker for those sour sweets too.

    neil: I had to ask my wife what the birds milk thing was all about, but it turns out I love them ;)

    Pille: Ah, good old Dime (in English). They used to be so popular here!

    Dagmar: My wife hated that hot liquorice you sent us, but I loved it. And how can you not like Sliwki?

    Monika Korngut: Seems you either love or hate Ptasie Mleczko. I love ‘em.

    rowena: I love dark too – a square or too is enough. It’s good for you, too (or so I keep telling myself).

    you know what, there’s a patisserie not far from my hometown in austria and one of their signature produces are prunes soaked in rum and covered in chocolate. utterly addictive and you risk getting slightly tipsy because you just can’t stop eating them… need to get my mum to send some pronto!
    i also used to love those fudge things in a brown wrapper with cows on it… a polish friend says they also have them over there and pille sent me some recently… yum!

    I was going to say the exact same thing as Chris- sour patch kids! Thank god for me, they’re vegan. I also love anything with marzipan. My friend Dorota brings back a great gum from Poland that is a green apple flavor which I love. Truffles and anything with a chocolate/orange or chocolate/mint is good. As a kid, my favorite was Kit Kats and Smarties. I’m very easy to please!

    Chocolate covered plums….we have nothing like that in the states…but boy I wish we did!

    johanna: It’s something I might try out myself later in the year – and soaking them in rum first seems an excellent idea.

    bazu: Sometimes I like marzipan (i.e. in stollen) and sometimes not (i.e. plastered in rubbery strips onto cheap wedding cakes)…

    Shannon: I try and steer away, but I do like it. White chocolate ice cream is perfect…

    peabody: Mail order! That’s where we get ours (or the local Polish shop)…

  13. I used to love Tamarindo, which is a Mexican candy made from the tamarind. Recently… hmm, I actually don’t eat much candy. I generally would rather bake something sweet! I do indulge in Turkish delights occassionally though. :)

    oh boy, wish I could taste it, sound wonderful!!! When I was a kid, I loved Fox candy and gummy ginger candy (the latter from Indonesia… I think). Now once in a while I’d love to munch Baci and Mon Cherie (dark chocolate coated with whole and chopped nuts).

    I agree, Shannon, white chocolate is just wonderful. And Almond Rocha! Oh, and my Mother used to make a homemade candy, Date Nut Roll, that I have been unable to replicate. mmmmm! :)

    Bon Pari (it’s Nestle’s trade mark, I think) SuperSour hard boiled candies – I can eat tons of those :P

    My second choice is Polish Krówki – just like Monika Korngut said: chewy ones are best :)

    Taste of my childhood is Pańska Skórka – I never saw it abroad & its probably imposible to translate… :(

    Ohh – few peeps here mentioned Polish Krówki (including myself), but, I think, no one posted english name for those. Well, I have some here right now, & there is english version on it: Milky Cream Fudge. Best ones are from city Milanówek. Good hunting guys :wink:

    Ari (Baking and Books): I’m quite partial to Turkish delight myself. My fave is the quite soft rose variety, liberally covered with icing sugar :)

    gattina: I’m just addicted to dark chocolate too, and with nuts is even better!

    Michelle: Date Nut Roll sounds interesting. I’m very fond of dried fruit and the unique tastes…

    Voidam: Krówki are nice, but my favourite Polish sweets just have to be Śliwki w Czekoladzie…I love Chałwa too, though.

    For me it has to be the raisins covered in blueberry flavoured white chocolate we get from our local health food shop. My family have been going to the same place on Well Street in Hackney Wick since as far back as I can remember.

    Trig: You just had to go all complicated on us ;) I love chocolate covered raisins, but have never tried them in that style. Sounds great though!

    Hands down Rahat Lokum — Turkish Delight to us westerners, but it is a sweeter, sexier mystery when spoken in Arabic. And it must be rose flavored, natural rose, not that awful artificial tincture that matches the sickly pink dye. Claudia Roden has a recipe for it in “A Book of Middle Eastern Food.” I may have to happily resort to it.

    I’m going to go all simple and say Rowntrees Blackcurrant fruit pastilles :-)

    In all sweets I never like the blackcurrant flavour… apart from the above. Mmm they’re so good.

    Beff: Well at least your suggestion is simple, and only costs around 40p, too! On those sort of lines, I’m a wine gum man most definately.

    Mmmm, Turkish delight for me. But preferably in interesting flavours – I had a citrussy cube the other day that was marvellous. I have also had a soft spot for nut brittle my entire life. And last week I had some turron blando with almendras from Spain – less like nougat and more like a solid bar of almonsy peaniut butter. Rowwwwrrrrr!!
