Humus (Hummus, or Humous) is a popular dip in Greece, Turkey, and many other countries around the Middle East, made from Chickpeas with Tahini (creamed Sesame Seeds).
We had this on our honeymoon (in Crete) and loved it with the best crusty bread available. This recipe is the closest we can find to the authentic Greek taste.
Humus Recipe – Ingredients
- 1 can of Chickpeas
- Juice of one Lemon
- 1 Clove of Garlic
- Cumin
- Salt and Pepper, to taste
- 100g Tahini
- Olive Oil
Humus Recipe – Method
- Drain the liquid from the chickpeas.
- Slowly puree the chickpeas, adding the lemon juice.
- Add the tahini, and continue to puree.
- Add the cumin, salt and pepper, to taste.
- Slowly mix in olive oil until a suitable “dipping” consistency is reached.
And to serve…
Serve with your favourite Greek or Turkish dishes, and crusty white bread. Enjoy!

Hmm… cumin. I hadn’t thought of that. Sounds pretty nice. Personally, I tend to add paprika and red pepper to my hummus, but when I’m short on the peppers, I’m definitely going to give it a bash with cumin instead.
BTW… creating your own tahini with sesame seeds, sesame oil and water is really easy too. I couldn’t find any tahini in my local shops the first time I made it, so just blended it up myself. I have since found it, but once I figured out I could make it myself, I’ve never bothered buying as I only ever use it for my hummus so far.
I also tend to add a lot more garlic, but then, I love garlic. Still, I’m definitely going to try it with some cumin in future.
